near death experience

I decided to start my new year living life on the edge. All that I had planned to do today was go to the gym and get my hair cut…simple, and not too dangerous. Everything was going well until I decided that I should put gas in my car; that is where things started to get a bit more hairy. At the gas station I am always really careful so that I don’t build up static electricity so I don’t go shocking anything and blowing things up. I open my back door before I even touch the gas tank. Today was no different. When my tank was full and the gas stopped flowing, I got out of my already open back door so that I could take the nozzle out and go on my merry way. When I touched the nozzle, however; I shocked it and for an instant my life flashed before my eyes as I was sure that I was going to be blown up. Lucky for me, I was being watched out for and no explosions occurred. It doesn’t look like I’ll be dying today; I will get to see more of 2008.

an epitaph to 2007

Here we are, the last day of 2007. It is a bittersweet day, just mostly sweet though. This last year has just flown by. It seems like just yesterday that I was ringing in the new year of 2007. I figured that by recognizing some of the highlights of this last year it would send 2007 out in style and welcome 2008 with a bang.

I joined the digital world – I got facebook and a blog
I completed yet another year of school, leaving me with only a year and a half left.
The beaches of Hawaii were graced with my presence for a whole week
The perfect job knocked on my door without me really even applying.
I only moved twice (my car is big enough that I can fit almost all of my stuff into it in only two trips which is great).
A whole host of amazing roommates came in to my life.
I got accepted into my program at school, which means that I will be doing something that I enjoy when I graduate.
I was a bridesmaid for the first time ever, which was a pretty exciting experience.
Friends and family were ever present and amazing as always.
And last but not least, I managed to stay all in one piece with only a few scrapes and bruises to account for my clumsiness.

And there you have it…my top 10 for 2007.

walking on ice

Ah, the joy of the holiday season. I am done with all five of my finals and I get two whole weeks without studying. I get to spend time with my family, celebrate the reason for the season, and overall, just relax. The holiday season, however, is not all blissful. Take for example, the freezing cold weather. It is snowy, cold, and all the water freezes…forming rather dangerous ice. I experienced this to the fullest extent possible the other night when I came home from work. There is this corner that I have to walk around in order to get from my parking spot to the stairs that lead to my house, and the ground is slightly slanted. At midnight as I was rounding the corner, it looked really innocent. As i started to transfer my weight I just fell. I must say, it was a very graceful fall. I didn’t actually trip or struggle or anything. I went down without a fight. When I say that I went down, I really mean it…I ended up on my stomach right there in the middle of my parking lot. It was a perfectly smooth fall, all compliments to the black ice that was so discreetly hidden. I have the bruises to prove it. You have to love the snow and cold weather. Although, I do have to say that it really can be fun despite the danger lurking around every corner

motivation

Today is a reading day. I should be doing what every other college student does on a reading day – studying for my five finals that I have next week. I have no motivation to study for the tests that will determine what my grades will be this semester. I seem to run into this problem every semester though, so I should be used to it by now. For some reason I seem to be particularly distracted this time around. Oh how easily the mind wanders…

The good news about finals week is that I will have a break from school for a couple weeks so hopefully my motivating juices will start flowing again and I won’t be writing another blog like this one at the end of April.

funny, funny people

Some people are funny, just really funny. Some people are bold and will speak whatever is on their mind no matter how awkward it is. And then there are others that are all of the above.

My cousin and I rode trax twice today.

Excursion #1: We park under the Little America Hotel. When we surface, we notice that there is a trax train waiting and so we start running to catch it before it leaves so that we don’t have to wait for the next one. Upon arrival at the train, we ask the people in the compartment closest to the end which direction it was going. Lucky for us it was headed towards the Energy Solutions Arena. Before we are even settled in this older (married) man next to us is telling the young single adults that he is with that they should ask for our phone numbers. They go on about this for a while before the older man finally just asks us for the younger ones. My cousin is engaged, lucky for her she had an excuse. Not me. I just nod my head and try as politely as I can to pretend that the situation isn’t awkward. Dang being single. Banter about the subject continued on throughout the final few minutes of our train ride until we arrived at our destination.

Excursion #2: The game was over, and unfortunately the Jazz lost (it was a good game though…for a minute we even thought that they would be able to pull off the win). The trax train pulled into the station and people loaded on until it was our turn. We were behind everyone a little ways so we had to open the doors. Before we are even settled in and ready for the ride, this guy a few rows back tells the guy standing next to us that he should ask us for our numbers. My cousin and I exchanged a look that clearly communicated ‘seriously?’ What we actually said was “funny, but this happened to us on the way in too.” After that statement came out the very full car echoes all at once “shut down.” Wow, was this starting to get funny. Banter continued with these guys as it had with the ones in excursion #1. About halfway through our short ride of less than a mile, a girl gets on and stands between the guys that were laughing about our little run in and my cousin and me. She proceeds to ask us if they are our guys that she is standing next to. It just kept getting better.

Lessons Learned-

My cousin and I aren’t allowed on trax
If you want to get hit on, trax to and from Jazz games is a pretty good place to be
Laugh at the awkwardness, it makes for a pretty good story afterwards
People are just really, really funny. End of story.

tis the season

Tis the season for dancing around the Christmas tree, looking for reindeer, and waking up at insane hours of the morning to go get the perfect gift. The snow is falling and the weather has turned cold again. Trees are in a permawhite state…no leaves, and a beautiful snow covering. Hot chocolate drinking has commenced and the gingerbread house making is underway. Snow angels and snowmen are seen and snowball fights are common. Tis the season for celebrating!

dating 101

I will first start off with a little back ground. I have been forced to spend my Thanksgiving vacation in Hawaii…hanging out with my long lost friend Kristen, playing on the beach everyday, basking in the perfect weather. Poor me, I know.

Anyway, while I was beach today there were a group of Polynesians playing football. A couple times the ball came whizzing past Kristen and me and one would come over to retrieve it and apologize for interrupting us. After about three times the ball hit me in the back. Instead of just apologizing and continuing on with his game, this time when the guy came over he apologized-much more profusely this time because, after all, he did hit me with the ball-and then took a seat beside us and started talking to us. It appeared that he wanted to talk to us. What better way than hitting us with the football-perfect excuse, right? In some circumstances one would think that this was annoying, but it all worked out for the better today. Mainly it was just funny…the lengths that boys go to in order to get our attention. It turns out that he works at the Polynesian Cultural Center (which, if you have ever wanted to go and visit it is incredibly expensive). Seeing as how he needed to make amends for hitting me with his football, he said that he would get us in. I needed some repayment for all of my pain

it happens

1. I fall down the stairs…and it’s really disappointing when no one sees it, especially if I really turfed it.

2. Really loud sneezes…kind of gross when you think about all the bacteria and who knows what else that you are launching into the air, but lets face it, they are just a part of life.

3. Days that are really great…even when it should be a bad day because work is really busy or you have three papers to write (or as in my case, both) but it is still just a great day.

4. Vacations…one word – HAWAII!

5. Basking in the simple things…it is so great to get a phone call from someone you haven’t talked to in a while, or even someone that you talk to all the time, a text message just for fun, a smile from a stranger on the way to class, etc.

my cynical musings

I am going to base the whole of this blog off of the quote from the movie Hitch, when Sara come back from her vacation early and her boss says something along the lines of “You say your a Realist who parades around as a cynisist but is secretly an optimist” (okay, all you movie critics out there I know that I slaughtered the quote, but I think that you know what I’m talking about).

Sometimes I can tend to be quite cynical. I hate my classes, homework, and everyone around me (okay…not always, but on really bad days). Normally I try to hide my cynicism, but recently I’ve decided to let it shine. In my humanities class we have talked about the great enlightenment philosophers and many of them were cynical, so I’ve decided to just embrace my own philosophy and maybe one day I’ll go down in history for it and people will be talking about my view of world and even be tested on it. haha

Here is my main rant…people. I mean seriously, people. Sometimes they can be so horrible! Sometimes they are great too, but I don’t feel like that happens nearly as often. In American Heritage, I learned that people are selfish. They only do things for selfish reasons. If they can get something out of it, then they’ll do it. Since that class I have been noticing that that is really a true statement. I’ve tried to convince myself other wise, but people just keep proving that statement to be true. So my advice is this…if you want to be known and remembered as a good person, don’t think about what is in it for you. Think about how you are helping someone else and what others are going to get from this experience and go with it. It’s not always about you!! So maybe I am a cynisist parading around as a realist, but secretly an optimist or whatever…I’ll let you decide
